Prehistoric Farm: How to Get Fossils from Dig Sites

Last updated 2026-10-06Unofficial player article

Find the Prehistoric Farm fossil digging activity, release the shovel in green, and distinguish fossil pieces from other dig rewards.

Get fossils in Prehistoric Farm by digging at marked Dig Sites on fossil islands. Cambrian is the first fossil island in the opening route, and the Wooden Shovel supports that period. The reward from an individual dig can also be coins or Buried Treasure.

The gameplay video shows repeated Cambrian digs and the player collecting enough pieces for an extraction. Notice that not every attempt produces the missing creature piece.

Start with a site your shovel supports

Take the starter shovel to the Cambrian Dig Site and equip it before digging. Hold the input, follow the meter and release when it is green. That is the official action for a better find, rather than a guaranteed fossil result.

Later fossil periods have their own shovel access. Reaching the island by boat does not prove your current shovel can dig its sites. Check the tool requirement of the site you are actually trying to use.

Separate fossils from other digging rewards

Coins and Buried Treasure are documented alternatives to fossils. Do not count them toward a creature set or treat them as evidence that a fossil vanished. Exact fossil odds and treasure contents are not established, so no number of attempts here guarantees a particular creature.

When a fossil appears, check which creature it belongs to. Collection progress is about that creature's set. An inventory containing several species can grow without any one egg becoming ready.

Collect toward an extraction target

For Cambrian, collect five fossils for one creature, then return to Dr. Ivy's DNA Lab. Consider checking the set count before extending the trip or selling items. This is a practical recommendation based on the extraction requirement, not a way to choose which fossil drops next.

Use digging timing to practice the release. Use complete fossil sets once the question is how many pieces of the same creature you still need. Those separate checks make an unready egg easier to diagnose than simply digging without looking at the collection.
